How to Meditate (A way of many)
Here is the practice that works well for me.
1. Find a comfortable position. Something that conveys a feeling of strength is helpful, to avoid becoming sleepy.
2. Close eyes.
3. Place attention loosely on X. Maintain a sense of global awareness, this is not a concentration exercise.
4. When the mind notices the attention of mind has wandered, smoothly goto #3.
5. While the attention of mind is wandering, nothing can be done until #4 happens.
What Is X?
Start with X = breath.
Breath is a wonderful anchor because it is both automatic and controllable. Just like thoughts.
During the meditation, there is no need to try and control breathing. Let it be what it is.
After practice and once time(3) >> time(5) and time(4) -> 0, try X = attention + breath.
After practice and once time(3) >> time(5) and time(4) -> 0, try X = thoughts + attention + breath. Be careful.
After practice and once time(3) >> time(5) and time(4) -> 0, try.... here is where things get really.
